Entry requirements for Nigerian and West African applicants
- Bachelor's route: WAEC/NECO with good grades in five subjects plus at least one year at a recognised Nigerian university, then a Studienkolleg foundation year and the Feststellungsprüfung exam. Two completed years in Nigeria can allow direct entry at some universities.
- Master's route: a completed Nigerian bachelor's degree (usually 2:2 or better), transcripts, NYSC certificate and a CV; most applications go through uni-assist.
- Language proof: IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 88 for English-taught programmes, or Goethe/telc B2–C1, TestDaF or DSH for German-taught ones. Hybrid programmes accept German A1 at entry and take you to B2 during the course.
- Documents: international passport, admission letter, blocked-account confirmation, health insurance, motivation letter and certified translations of every certificate.
Not sure which route fits your certificates? Our free German courses (A1–C2) get the language requirement out of the way while your application is being prepared.
Application timeline for the 2027 intakes

- 9 months before: shortlist tuition-free programmes and register with uni-assist.
- Winter semester: apply by 15 July; summer semester: apply by 15 January. Some programmes close earlier — check each entry above.

Frequently asked questions
Are German public universities really tuition-free for Nigerians?
Yes. Public universities in almost every German state charge no tuition fees to international students, including Nigerians and other West Africans. You still pay a semester contribution of roughly €120–€350, which usually covers student services and a local transport ticket. Baden-Württemberg is the main exception: it charges €1,500 per semester to non-EU students.
How much money do I need to show for the visa as a Nigerian applicant?
You must show proof of financing in a German blocked account (Sperrkonto). For 2026/2027 intakes the standard figure is €11,904 for twelve months (€992 per month), plus your health insurance. Budget separately for the visa fee (€75), flights and the APS certificate.
Do I need the APS certificate from Nigeria?
Nigeria is not currently part of the APS academic evaluation scheme that applies to countries such as India, China and Vietnam, but WAEC/NECO and degree certificates must be verifiable and are checked by uni-assist. Always confirm the current rule with the German Embassy in Abuja before you pay any fee.
Can I study in Germany in English?
Yes for many master's programmes and a growing number of bachelor's and hybrid programmes, where the first semesters are taught in English while you learn German up to B2 inside the curriculum. Fully German-taught programmes require a TestDaF, DSH or Goethe B2/C1 certificate.
Is a WAEC result enough to enter a German university?
Not on its own. Nigerian applicants normally need WAEC/NECO plus at least one year of study at a recognised Nigerian university, then a Studienkolleg foundation year and the Feststellungsprüfung exam. Applicants with a completed Nigerian bachelor's degree can apply directly to master's programmes.
Can I work while studying?
Yes. Student residence permits allow 140 full days or 280 half days of work per year, and working student roles in your field are common. After graduation you can apply for an 18-month residence permit to look for a job.
